If you have a any connection to college you will be interested in this non-profit organization I work with. FUEL or Families United in Educational Leadership guides low-income and first generation college students through the confusing and multifaceted college application process. With most of the staff fluent in Spanish, they are able to conduct Savings Circles (the classes for parents/kids) effortlessly switching between English and Spanish for those who need it.
Not only does it simply explain FAFSA and scholarship options, it offers financial incentives to families who save money for their college bound child.
I love working with the education facilitators who are so talented in making seemingly complicated financial explanations into fun and valuable learning experiences. From Chelsea to Dorchester, these facilitators meet with parents and students to make the college application process easier. What an awesome experience it is to photograph such talent: the driven parents and students in the program, as well as the FUEL staff.
One of my favorite aspects of starting Herradura Studio has been forming relationships with other small businesses around Boston. For the past couple months I have been lucky to work with DanceFit Studio, with locations in Brookline and Natick.
I grew up dancing but had to stop at age 13 after a fractured back, so my feelings about dance were pretty depressing and I was also hesitant due to watching Dance Moms (those people are a bit intense!). BUT Since seeing this workout studio I have been completely converted into a dance lover. The studio is welcoming, gorgeous, and Gina, a professional dancer and the owner, is so motivating and caring that working out becomes pure joy. Having just discovered the stress reducing powers of yoga, I can definitely add DanceFIT Studio to my list of “things to do to remain sane.” The music, staff, participants are all so positive, which I’m sure comes from Gina’s leadership. They also have kids and toddler classes. I watched this class one time and could not stop smiling. I will drag my niece with me there soon.
